Initial Designs: Stress Balls

Based on the data collected, it is clear that the most liked design is number 5. 66.6% of people preferred this design. The main reason, stated by the survey subjects, is that it is the most colourful design. Hence, on our final design, we will make sure to incorporate a colourful design to appeal to our audience. In addition, the second most liked design, number 1 (22.2% of people preferred it), was liked due to its glitter incorporation. We will add glitter into our final design. Moreover, these aspects of the ideas will be developed due to their agreement with the stress ball specification (see below). It was stated that the galaxy stress balls will have glitter, and mix various colours, which is also what seemed to attract our target audience. Also, all of these designs incorporate the malleable, but now wet 'gel' like inside specified in the specification. This material will be changed with regards to colour, through using different coloured food colouring in the gel like material.

•A: Our stress balls will have a variety of aesthetic features. We will have foam stress balls and gel ‘galaxy’ stress balls. The foam stress balls will be sold in containers. A single stress ball will mix different colours. The target audience research suggests that this is ideal, due to the wide variety of favorite colors specified, and the like of multi-colored products. It will be dry, yet malleable, hence not making a mess when used. Our gel ‘galaxy’ stress ball will be multi coloured, and have glitter inside of it to resemble stars. It will be shiny, transparent, and colourful. The actual material will be malleable, but not be wet, nor will it make a mess.
•C: The cost of our stress ball products will be £1.50. The cost to make each one is an estimated £0.75. This is an appropriate cost, as other stress balls we have analysed have been in the range of £1.50 to £2.50. Hence, we are selling our higher quality products, that won’t burst, for the lower end price of the stress ball market. This will be highly attractive to our target audience.
•E: The materials we will mainly be new glue, food colouring, etc. (see materials section). However, we will be using recycled Styrofoam, which will have a positive affect on the environment, through reducing waste and advancing the advent of recycling. This will be a point to further appeal to our target market, as eco-friendly products generally have a greater appeal.
•S: Our products will be safe to use. There will be no harmful chemicals used in the product, that could potentially harm our customers’ skin. However, our stress balls will most likely contain borax. Based on research performed in criterion A, borax makes the highest quality gel inside material for stress ball. This could be harmful if ingested. We will ensure that this is explicitly explained to our customers, in order to ensure their safety. This will allow for a greater satisfaction of our customers, and hence please both parties, i.e. the buyers and the sellers.
•S: The size of our stress balls will be fairly small, and able to be easily gripped in the hand. The amount of either gel like material or stress ball foam will be enough fully fit in the cup of someone’s hand. Based on the anthropometric data given by (http://usability.gtri.gatech.edu/eou_info/hand_anthro.php), the average grip diameter is 52mm. A slightly large diameter, of 60mm, is appropriate due to the malleability of the stress ball. This will be our product's diameter.
•F: The function of our stress balls is to provide a object that is easy to fidget with, and noiseless whilst fidgeting. This will help increase students’ concentration within class, through craving their desire to fidget. Other products for this purpose, such as spinners, make a large amount of noise, which could ironically lead to distraction. Our’s is noiseless, and hence poses no threats to disrupting other students’ concentration.
•M: Our stress balls will feature two main types: foam and gel. The foam like stress balls will be made from recycled Styrofoam, as well as a mixture of a flexible, malleable substance. This substance will be made of glue, water, food colouring, and liquid starch. The gel-like stress balls will be made of a transparent yet coloured malleable substance. This will be made from liquid glue, food colouring, glitter powder, borax, and water. Research performed in criterion A suggests that this galaxy stress ball is best made from these materials, due to the ease of coloring its initial transparent state.
•P: Our product will be produced by hand, yet in a manner similar to an assembly line. By business partner and I will be mixing the materials in one section, and leaving them sit in another. Then, when the appropriate amount is made, we will work together to package the gel-inside material efficiently. The stress balls will be made in batches, i.e. not one at a time. We will make a large amount of the gel inside, and then distribute them into the containers.
•D: Our products will be durable. In fact, they will be nearly unable to break, as they are extremely malleable. They will be kept inside small plastic containers with plastic lids connected by a flexible hinge. These are durable containers, and will only be broken if stepped on, or deliberatley broken. Hence, our products will be of high durability, and thus please our target audience. In additon to this, the plastic containers will help with containing and transporting the gel inside, due the inside being malleable, and thus hard to transport without an appropriate container.
•T: Our products will be tested through a trial run of making the stress ball's gel inside. We will, through this testing, be able to either confirm the material's desired properties, or be able to adapt the recipe for these desired properties of malleability, color, and consistency.
Advertisement
This poster was created to advertise our products and business, hopefully attracting our target audience to buy our products. I have used the variety of colors, i.e. blue, yellow, purple, and grey. This is because research performed in criterion A suggested that our target audience enjoys wide arrays of color. Hence, this advertisement is hoped to appeal to the target audience. These posters will be hung up all around ICS, to achieve maximum reach to our customers. They will only be hung at ICS, due to ICS students and staff being our target audience.
Pricing, Materials Research, and Budgeting
Here, I have created a simple profit calculating program, where the Price Per Unit, Total Units Sold, and Total Cost of Materials are input parameters. In addition, I have calculated and sorted the materials needed to create the stress balls, the cost of each individual materials, the total cost of the materials, and where to get them from. Hence, this will help us manage our finances that knowing if we need to increase the price to at least break even in terms of the money spent and made.

• Aesthetics: The lanyards that be will go for three colors red, black and white. They will have many different designs, not all designs will be in all colors as some designs do not look good on certain colors. Additionally, we will have different types of designs such as hand- drawn, printed or add using the sticker machine and then applying glue in order for the sticker to stay put. Furthermore, we will also have special orders in order for people to have the option to chose what the design of their lanyard is. From the research that has been done in criteria many great and aesthetic ideas for designs have been made therefore many of these ideas will be made. Also from the research that was made for criteria A we can now have numerous colors as initially we only thought about having white and maybe black, however, as the website gives us the option of using different colors we will.
•Cost: The lanyards will go for 5 to 7 pounds. The reason why the will have different prices is because different lanyards will need different amounts of money to be made. Additionally, as some of them will be hand made they will take a certain amount of time. The reason the prices are high in general is because we will be using high quality in order for the product to last. From the criterion A research that was made we have found a website that that sells lanyards, they cost £2.75 each if 16 are bought all together.
•Customer: This product will be bought by everyone from the school as lanyards are very useful for any age. They can be used for numerous reasons that is why we have a wide range of target market. Firstly, the teachers will buy the lanyards as most of them cycle to school therefore, they could hang their keys to the lock for their bike from their pants in order for them to lock their bike quickly. Additionally, the students will buy the lanyard as most students have messy stuffed bags therefore by having their lanyard they could find their keys more quickly. Furthermore, the students could tie the lanyard on their belt loop in and put in their pocket which would make sure the keys are not dropped or lost in any way.
•Environment: This product will be sold during break time and 2nd lunch time. Our product will be environmentally friendly, as all of the materials we will be using will be planned, therefore no materials will be wasted. We will only be using paper and paint for the lanyards, and as the designs will be planned we will be coping them.
•Size: The lanyard will have a kind of rectangular shape. It will have 25cm length and a 2cm width They will all be the same measurements as we will order all of them at once in order for them to arrive in time. From our criterion A research and the website that we found these are the measurements are the ones the website gives the option to print.
• Safety: This product is safe by itself, however, it can be chocking hazard for kids as if it placed around their neck and they start playing with it and accidentally rap it around their necks they might choke. Additionally, if keys are attached and they spin the lanyard they could hurt themselves or the people around them. The way we will prevent that is before selling them giving the buyer a little note that explains the hazards, allowing them to know the risks before using it.
•Function: This product has numerous functions firstly, it holds all your keys together, additionally it is a type of a fidget toy as you can spin it around. Furthermore, it helps you locate your keys faster in your messy bag, also it could hold your keys in your pocket with more security.
•Materials: As the product will be different the, materials will be different, however, the main materials will be textiles and metal for the clip. However, the different lanyards will have stickers, printed and paint. The reason I will use these materials is because they will make the product aesthetically pleasing but also be very durable resulting on them not coming off, which would result on the lanyard not to be ruined.

From these initial ideas I have chosen to develop the numbers 3,4,5. The reason why I will develop these is because they can be customised allowing us to have a different range of customers. The reason I will not develop the numbers 1 and 2 is because they look way to childish and my target audience is not only children, it is adults to and as already mentioned by having them write their names in a cool way we will have a high range of different ages. Resulting us to have many customers.

I chose these designs after my trip in Camden town, after seeing a case with the signature of a famous artist I got inspired and got the idea of putting different signatures on the lanyards. As I wanted it to be different I decided to not to do it English but in Greek. After looking up Greek letters I used them to write the word god on a design of the lanyard. Subsequently making the first design I stumbled upon a document with Greek old symbols which I used for my other three designs. I interviewed 7 people, the majority of the people said they prefer 3rd design on the lanyard as they believe is plain and simplistic. Allowing it to be used by older people not only kids, as kids are more into crazy and weird designs. Therefore I will be developing the 3rd design, however, it will not be the only design it will just be the first that is going to be created.
For the design I chose to develop all of my points of the specification were met.

The way it met the aesthetics point, is because it will be sold in two different colours, red and black.

The way the cost point is met is because the lanyards will be bought for 2.75 each and sold for 5 pounds allowing us to have 2.25-pound profit for each one sold.

The way the customer point is met is because the purpose of the lanyard will still remain the same as the design will be printed on therefore, it will be durable resulting on it being able to do the movements that were planned.

The way it met the environment point is because I have planned everything for it, therefore it will not need to be sent back for any reason, resulting on materials to be wasted.

The way the size point was by making the lanyard design 250mm long, however, the width is a little bigger than planned instead of 20mm it is 25mm.

The safety is not met for now, as the little papers are not made yet however, when the lanyards arrive the little papers with the hazards will be made.

The way the function point is met is because as already mentioned the design on it will be printed allowing it to have the same function as planned.

The way the material point is met is because the materials that will be used are good quality, the reason why that said is because from the research that was conducted in criteria A, I found out that the website that I will be using is selling good quality products with good quality materials.
Final Design Lanyard
I do not need more research to complete, the reason why that is, is because I have already found t a website that would allow us to order the products. This is the only important thing I would need at the moment as the basic and important primary and secondary research has been completed. The school does not have all of the resources I need in order to create the product however, they do have some such as they paint and the stickers we will add. As already mentioned I already have found a website to order the lanyards from. The skills in order to make this product are very basic therefore, I believe I will be able to do it. I do believe I will be able to make this product on time as the materials will not take a long time to arrive and the creation does not take much time either. The reason I have decided to keep the design of the final product then the initial idea is because is because the product looks very nice and simplistic which is wits porpuse and by adding more stuff it will become like the other and lose its originality.
Advertisement
The reason why I made this poster is for one main reason, in order to advertise that we are selling stress ball. This product did not only show what are selling but also the times that we will be selling them at and also to contact us for special requests. The special requests were not the only thing our email could be used for but also for questions. The reason the comic character “Buzz Light-year” is used in the poster is for numerous reasons. The main reason is because it has the same name as our company name.
Another reason why I used it is because it is something that is mostly known for the kids in our school and some teachers, therefore having something familiar figure allows the target audience to remember the poster allowing us to get more costumers.
Finally, the reason I used the comic character “Buzz Light-year” is because in the movie he is seen he is from space, and space has the same colour as we will be using for the stress balls. The reason why it is important for us to have poster is in order for us to advertise our product in order to attract customers.
